Spiritual Direction FAQs

Care for Your Soul with a Companion for The Journey

To start our FAQ, it helps to know that Spiritual Direction is almost a misnomer

… the true Director is always the Holy Spirit, while the human companion is simply helping you notice God at work, a practice tracing its roots back to the 3rd-century Desert Fathers and Mothers.

Today, we prefer the term Spiritual Direction over Biblical Counseling specifically to distinguish our ministry from professional mental health care, ensuring a clear boundary around our spiritual focus (though you may still wonderfully experience some parallel mental health benefits along the way!)

  • What is Spiritual Direction?

While Biblical Counseling & Spiritual Direction sound like different paths, they historically spring from the exact same ancient tradition: the care of souls (cura animarum).

We treat these terms interchangeably because both are rooted in listening deeply, walking alongside you, and looking for where God is already active in your story.

Rather than treating you as a problem to solve, this process is about holy companionship, discernment, and helping you cultivate deep spiritual rhythms in everyday life.

  • How does Spiritual Direction Work at Church by the Sea?

Our Soul Care ministry operates directly through the posture of radical kindness and unconditional love.

In Spiritual Direction we provide a space for quiet reflection, prayerful listening, and scriptural encouragement.

Please note: At this time, we do not offer couples or marriage counseling; our sessions are designed strictly for individual Spiritual Direction and Soul Care.

  • Is this Mental Health Care?

No. Spiritual Direction or Biblical Counseling are non-clinical forms of Spiritual Companionship and discernment.

They do not constitute licensed mental health therapy, professional psychotherapy, or psychiatric medical treatment.

Referrals to our Clinical Partners are Available upon Request or when your issue falls outside the scope of our care.

  • What if I Need Mental Health Care from a Clinician?

We deeply honor the role of clinical care. If your situation requires specialized clinical attention, diagnosis, or licensed psychotherapy, we maintain a trusted referral network of licensed mental health professionals and will gladly connect you with the right care.

  • What does it cost?

Spiritual Direction at Church by the Sea is free for everyone,

and available with Priority to Church Members & then Regular Attenders, or referrals from Congregants.

Basically, the connection to the ministry should originate within the context of Church Life at Church by the Sea.

Donations are appreciated but never expected or required.

  • How often can I book?

To allow space for deep integration and ensure every individual receives thoughtful follow-up, formal sessions are booked once a month. This is a Typical Frequency for Spiritual Direction.

Pastor Jonny sees his spiritual Director once a Month.

  • Can I check in between appointments?

Yes! You can schedule up to one 20-minute check-in call per week between your monthly primary sessions to stay connected and encourage your ongoing rhythms. These check-ins will take place by Phone.
